A message from Jim Loughrey, the President of LINK Corporation and the inventor of SwitchGenie™
I am proud to say that the LINK team has a wide range of products to offer to lighting companies, engineers, architects, utility companies, end users and people who are looking for green alternatives that conserve energy in their lighting products.
The existing lighting in America's buildings consume about 38% (according to the DOE) of the energy used in the buildings. Lighting fixtures are the only electrical appliance that has rarely been scheduled, programmed, automated or computerized to save energy. We still operate a majority of the lights with wall switches or circuit breakers for ON/OFF control.
The education necessary to convince the general public that there is a way to cut energy usage should not be difficult.
Everyone has experienced the use of a 3-way light bulb. That simple concept of multiple light levels from one fixture should prompt the question, "why not do that with all commercial light fixtures?"
The technology used to light fluorescent lamps has changed over the last 65 years since they were introduced. Now they are very efficient and produce almost 100 lumens per watt compared to the incandescent lamp that produces 12 lumens per watt.
However, we still control all the lamps in a fixture together.
The lighting industry has been trying since the 1970's to market dimmable fluorescent lamps that are reliable and cost effective. They have achieved a high degree of reliability and good dimming performance; however, the cost is higher than most customers are willing to pay.
The energy savings are not linear with light output so the Department of Energy doesn't endorse fluorescent dimming as an energy saving strategy.
SwitchGenie™ is a step switching product that saves energy in a direct relationship to the amount of light produced by the fixture. 50% of the light is produced by the use of 50% of the electricity. This is very simple. And the fluorescent lamps love it. Switched lamps last longer than dimmed lamps.
The education for the public that there is a better way to control lighting is our product.
I remember my Grandmother saying "Waste Not, Want Not". That is one of the driving forces behind SwitchGenie™. Why waste energy if you don't need the light? We all know that the best way to save energy is to "Turn off the lights".
